Unfinished work

Just at the moment when I set to work, I found a sheet of paper which I had seen a hundred times without paying any attention to it, and an it was ... the solution that I had searched for so long, a solution that agreed perfectly with the one I had just invented anew!

This is a fate reserved for none save constructors: to have a plan of construction, to lose it and, what is worse, to find it again.

Fragments

From 1907-1912, Schoenberg completed 80 paintings. From 1915-1923, he published no new works. From 1926-28, he was very productive. Works were not finished for various reasons: the War, financial restrictions, limited time, or other obligations.

  • MOSES UND ARON (OPERA IN THREE ACTS)

  • DIE JAKOBSLEITER (NACH EINER DICHTUNG DES KOMPONISTEN) FÜR SOLI, CHOR UND ORCHESTER ["JACOB'S LADDER" ORATORIO FOR SOLI, MIXED CHORUS AND ORCHESTRA]

  • Chorwerke (Fragmente)

  • EIN STELLDICHEIN [A TRYST] FOR OBOE, CLARINET VIOLIN, VIOLONCELLO AND PIANO (FRAGMENT, 1905)

Even if Schoenberg finished the works, he did not hear many of them being performed live (sometimes never and sometimes only on the radio). Some were completed but performed years after their composition: for example, Erwartung (performed 25 years after written), Lucky Hand (11 years), and Peace on Earth (radio only in 1911).
