Impression III (Concert) - Kandinsky

What we are striving for and our whole manner of thought and feeling have so much in common that I feel completely justified in expressing my empathy. In your works you have realized what I … have for so greatly longed for in music.

Yes, everyone is free to criticize me behind my back; there is plenty of room there. But if I come to hear of it, he is liable to my retaliation, and no quarter given.

Schoenberg to Kandinsky (1923)

SCHOENBERG

KANDINSKY

Artists collaborate, think together about topics, and share ideas. Kandinsky, first a part of the Blue Rider, worked with the Bauhaus and invited Schoenberg to exhibit four of his paintings in 1911 or 12 in Munich. They communicated through letters, and Schoenberg declined working for the Bauhaus because he was a Jew and did not want to support the Bauhaus' anti-semitic tendencies. Values and belief drive the arts and collaboration.

INTERSECTIONS

Hear what Kandinsky had to say about Schoenberg’s paintings:

[A work of art is] a labyrinth where, at every point, every knowledgeable person is aware of the entrance and the exit without needing a golden thread to guide him.
